Apraos House
The two simple stone buildings with the green shutters, poised on the rocks just above the water-line at the south eastern end of Apraos Bay, have always intrigued people. They resemble a house that the Durrells might have stayed in, or the setting for a film. The present owner has renovated Apraos House and Studio, which was once used by sardine fishermen, with skillful and imaginative use of available space. The houses are compact in size, but a beautiful raised sun terrace beside the main house, bounded by fig and olive trees, makes a wonderful setting for outdoor meals – surely the essence of summer by the sea? There are about 25 steps, as well as a path, leading down from the main house to the sea, where there are sunbathing terraces and a private boat mooring. A short paddle from here through very shallow water brings you to the beach, which can of course be accessed in a more conventional way if required. Kalamaki Beach stretches away from the villa, long, shallow and sandy and perfect for children.
