Set in the Park Natural da Arrabida, its well-tended gardens are shaded by trees and surrounded by sun-drenched vineyards, and forays into the local area reveal a feast of lovely villages. There are really good restaurants in the little fishing port of Sesimbra, 12km away. Shops and cafes in Azeitao are within walking distance, and tennis, golf and horse-riding are all available within about a 5km drive.
